INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Magic Johnson has pulled himself out of consideration for the United States Olympic team citing the desire to spend more time with his family and to not create a controversy over the final two selections for the team.

"In the back of my mind, I think somebody might say it's unfair, maybe the other guys deserve a chance, because they've played all season," Johnson said following the game. "I want to be on it, but I don't want to cause controversy."

Johnson, 36, also said the schedule could prove to be too hectic. "To go into the playoffs and then the Olympics would be too much. It would take away from time with my family."

Sacramento Kings guard Mitch Richmond, Seattle SuperSonics forward Shawn Kemp and Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Kidd are the favorites for the remaining two spots on the team.

Johnson has played primarily at forward since his return on Jan. 30 and is averaging 14.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists in 11 games. He scored 14 points Sunday in a 111-107 home loss to the Houston Rockets.

"He's already played," said Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon, who already has been selected to the team. "That at least would give a younger guy a chance. You have to look at that as an opportunity of a lifetime. I think he made the right decision."

Johnson, who is earning $2.5 million this year, also said that he plans to play next season.

Johnson won a gold medal playing for the original Olympic "Dream Team" in 1992. Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan, another member of the Dream Team, has already stated numerous times that he does not wish to compete in the Atlanta Games.

"It was a great experience for me, and I just think another young player should get that opportunity," said Jordan.
